Fenwick penalty wins it as Playwell United hold on for 2‑1 home victory over Westgate Rovers

Scott Fenwick converted from the spot on 72 minutes to put Playwell United 2-1 up and settle a close Premier Division contest at Mill Lane Stadium on Thursday evening. Westgate Rovers had levelled things up after Ryan Alderton's opener, but the lads dug in and got the job done in front of around a hundred supporters.

Alderton breaks the deadlock

Playwell United made the first mark on the scoreboard on 31 minutes. Jamie Telford's delivery found Ryan Alderton, who got across his man and powered a diving header home to make it 1-0.

Westgate level before the break

That lead lasted only seven minutes. Westgate Rovers pulled level on 38 minutes to make it 1-1, and both sides went in at half-time with everything still to play for.

Whitmore adds fresh legs

Ten minutes into the second half, Sam Whitmore came on as a winger for Marcus Brennan, bringing fresh energy into the game. The match remained tight, but Playwell United kept working.

Fenwick steps up

The decisive moment came on 72 minutes. Marcus Brennan had won the penalty, and Scott Fenwick stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to put Playwell United 2-1 ahead. From there, the lads saw it out on a wet surface to take the three points.

Telford earns Player of the Match

Jamie Telford was named Player of the Match. The midfielder set up the opening goal and put in a hard-working, honest shift throughout, covering the ground from first whistle to last.

Bennet on the penalty and the graft to win it

Manager Shaun Bennet said, “It takes real nerve to step up and take a penalty in a game like that, and Scott took it brilliantly. We scored first and set pieces were a big part of how we created chances tonight, but they came back at us and we had to work hard to get back in front. There was a spell where we had to really dig in and stay patient, and the lads did that. To come through a close one like this, on a wet pitch, in a big game, shows what this group is made of.”
