Fenwick brace and a makeshift keeper not enough as Redmoor United win 3‑2

Scott Fenwick scored twice to give Playwell United every chance on Saturday afternoon, but Redmoor United's three set-piece goals proved the difference in a 2-3 away defeat at Redmoor Park. It was a frustrating afternoon, made harder by losing goalkeeper John Hartley to injury at half-time.

Redmoor United set the tone early

The hosts were ahead inside four minutes, converting a set-piece to make it 0-1. Playwell responded well. On ten minutes, Liam Granger found Scott Fenwick and he tapped home to level things up at 1-1.

Redmoor United regained the lead on 28 minutes through another set-piece goal, and Playwell went into the break at 1-2 down. Both sides picked up a yellow card in the first half.

Hartley off, Pryce steps in

The second half brought an immediate challenge. Goalkeeper John Hartley came off injured at the start of the second half and, with no reserve keeper available, Danny Pryce stepped up from defence to take his place between the sticks. It was not a situation anyone had planned for, and Danny did his best in difficult circumstances.

Playwell kept going. On 62 minutes, Fenwick levelled again, this time with a half-volley that came back off the crossbar and in, with Granger again providing the assist to make it 2-2.

Telford adds energy, Redmoor find a winner

Jamie Telford came on in midfield for Chris Maddox on 68 minutes, adding some energy in the middle of the park. Three minutes later, Redmoor United scored their third set-piece goal of the afternoon to put the hosts 3-2 up.

Karl Neville came on as a striker for Ryan Alderton on 78 minutes and pressed from the front, but Playwell could not find a way back into it. The final score stayed at 2-3.

Fenwick takes the award

Scott Fenwick was named Player of the Match. His two goals, both assisted by Liam Granger, kept Playwell in the game twice over, and his consistent hard work throughout was reflected in that brace.

Back at Mill Lane next week

Playwell United are back at Mill Lane Stadium on Sunday, 20 September 2026, when Stanwick City come to town for a 2:00 PM kick-off. If you can get down to Mill Lane, it would be good to have you there as the lads look to put this one right on home ground.

Bennet on a tough afternoon

Manager Shaun Bennet said: “The guys did great despite losing our keeper and playing with a defender between the sticks. That is not an easy situation to deal with, and the lads deserve credit for adapting and keeping going. We conceded first and still found a way back into it twice, so there is plenty to take from that, even if the result is a frustrating one to swallow. Jamie Telford came on and gave us a lift in midfield, and we pushed right to the end, but on the day Redmoor United took their chances from set pieces and we could not quite match that.”
